　　作为美国第一个从乡村走出来的“美国偶像”，凯莉·安德伍德出生在小镇Checotah，三岁时就开始在当地的教堂唱诗班中唱歌。整个童年时期，她还在Lion和Old Settlers Day等俱乐部中助唱表演，稍大之后就已在节日期间到其他各州巡回表演了。随着演唱技艺的逐渐精湛，凯莉·安德伍德逐渐学会了演奏吉他和钢琴。在她以优异的成绩高中毕业之后，进入了东北大学主修大众传媒专业希望以后能够从事广播新闻工作。安德伍德在课余时间还是继续兼职唱歌表演。

　　2005年也就是她马上大学毕业的时候，安德伍德参加了“美国偶像”比赛的阶段赛，在圣路易斯的比赛中她以完美迷人的嗓音从12名参赛选手中脱颖而出获得2005“美国偶像”的称号。在参加2005年度第四届美国偶像大赛的时候，Carrie Underwood还只是一名没有毕业的大学生，只是10万预赛选手中不为人知的一位普通的音乐爱好者。由于生性腼腆害羞，因此在参赛的时候，Carrie Underwood大多选择演唱的曲目都是一些乡村音乐歌曲。但凭借出色的唱功和优雅的台风，Carrie Underwood最终战胜了包括来自亚拉巴马的实力强劲的摇滚歌手Bo Bice在内的诸多强手而夺冠，成为美国偶像大赛创办之后，继2002年的Kelly Clarkson，2003年的Ruben Studdard和去年的Fantasia Barrino之后的第四任冠军。

　　安德伍德的第一支单曲“Inside Your Heaven”在同年夏天发行，与此同时她也频频亮相在美国偶像节目现场。安德伍德开始在纳什维尔录制自己的第一张专辑Some Hearts，该专辑在同年秋天晚些时候正式发行并且很受欢迎，第一个星期就卖出了30万张，最后获得了超出白金唱片三倍的总销量，其中，专辑主打歌”Jesus, Take the Wheel”取得了巨大成功，连续六周蝉联告示牌乡村单曲榜冠军。专辑中的单曲有Inside Your Heaven, Jesus Take The Wheel, Don’t Forget To Remember Me, Before He Cheats, Wasted都进了billboard前50。该专辑的热度持续到2006年，当安德伍德再一次出现在2006年美国偶像大赛决赛之后，Some Hearts专辑重新进入了告示牌排行榜前十名，单曲”Jesus, Take the Wheel”获得了该年度乡村音乐学院奖的最佳单曲奖（安德伍德也获得最佳女歌手奖）。此外，她还获得了福音音乐学会颁发的白鸽奖以及乡村音乐奖的最具突破性专辑和最佳女歌手专辑两项大奖，她也是在乡村音乐奖中同时获得两项大奖的第一人。

　　2006年秋天，安德伍德带着她的专辑Some Hearts进行了巡演，尽管作为乡村音乐新星安德伍德的工作十分忙碌，但她还是抽出时间修完剩余的课程取得了学位，并成为人道对待动物协会的代言人 （在该协会组织的评选中她被评选为2005年世界上最性感的素食者）。

　　Underwood还在各大乡村音乐大奖上横扫，另外还于2007年获得格莱美两项大奖Best New Artist和Best Female Country Vocal Performance,同时在2008年第50届格莱美大奖上将 Best Female Country Vocal Performance收入囊中。

　　第二张专辑Carnaval Ride 2007年10月份出版，顺利登上冠军宝座。第一支单曲”So Small”，其后的”All-American Girl”都登上了乡村单曲榜冠军。同期她还演唱了电影Enchanted的主题曲”Ever Ever After”。

　　2008年2月10日，第50届格莱美颁奖礼，凯丽·安德伍德(Carrie Underwood)凭借《Before He Cheats》获得最佳乡村音乐女歌手奖（Best Female Country Vocal Performance）。
